Dana Kowalski recently asked which programs you can't live without which I take to mean what are the first programs you install on a computer.

All of these run on both Mac/PC.

  • Firefox :: has taken heat lately but it is still my browser of choice.
  • VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server :: Kinda clunky at first but plays whatever I throw at it.
  • Synergy :: Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display.
  • CFEclipse :: Founded in February 2004, the goal of the CFEclipse project is to create a plugin for the Eclipse platform that provides a professional quality IDE for CFML developers.
  • Aqua Data Studio :: Aqua Data Studio is the tool allows developers to easily create, edit and execute SQL scripts as well as browse database structures.
  • Thunderbird :: Reclaim your inbox.

  1. I'll throw in Firebug for Firefox. Makes playing with JavaScript much more fun (along with jQuery too!).
