I ran into an issue with VPN connections routing the traffic through the VPN connection regardless of the configuration setting. I would uncheck the box label Send all traffic over VPN connection, fire up the VPN link and be rewarded with all of the traffic going out over the VPN link.

After making new connections a few times and getting the same results, I decided to look up the issue. Basically it turns out there is a service sort order that the connections are fired against.

• Click on System Preferences
• Click on Network
• Click on the gear icon below the port listing
• Click on Set Service Order
• Drag the services around to set the order
• Click on ok

On mine, Airport was listed last before I changed it. Moved it up to below the ethernet and bluetooth pan adaptors but above the VPN connections. Now it works as I would expect it too.
